CLEMSON — Saluda resident and South Carolina 4-H member Devin Hipp earned the Joe Yeager Spirit of the Invitational award at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational in West Virginia this summer.
The award recognizes an outstanding 4-H contestant who takes initiative, shows enthusiasm and leads in academic and social situations.
Held July 26-31 at Jackson Mill State 4-H Camp near Weston, West Virginia, the 36th Annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational tests skills in tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map reading and forest stand evaluation. The event also includes a written exam and quiz bowl.

Four South Carolina 4-H members participated. Joining Hipp were Hannah Herlong of Saluda, Thomas McClinton of Ware Shoals and Wesley Ulmer from Lodge. The youth were selected for the team based on their participation in the S.C. 4-H Forestry Clinic. They have been practicing for the event monthly for the past 18 months.
Clemson University Extension forestry and natural resources agents Tom Brant, Jeff Fellers, Jaime Pohlman and Stephen Pohlman coached the youth.
Participation in this national event is supported by Saluda County Forestry Association, AgSouth Farm Credit, ACA Aiken office, ArborGen, Edgefield Forestry Association, Newberry Forestry Association, Thompson Forest Consultants, Greenwood Forestry Association, Laurens Forest Landowners Association and the McCormick Forestry Association.
Teams from Tennessee, New York, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia also competed in the invitational.
The South Carolina 4-H program is the youth-development program of Clemson Extension. More than 84,000 young people in South Carolina participate in 4-H. Programs cover animal science, agriculture, science, engineering, forestry, natural resources, leadership and much more.
